Walking 9 to 5, what a way to keep us living…

Leeds City Region aims to become a net-zero carbon economy by 2038. Transport (cars in particular) is one of the key offenders in terms of carbon emissions. Fortunately there is one low-tech, low maintenance, environmentally friendly, low-cost, instantly available, carbon-slashing travel tool that many of us could probably make far more use of: our legs!

Walk whenever you can!

However you do it, you can help the city meet its net-zero carbon target by taking part in the West Yorkshire Travel Plan Network’s* Challenge 2038. It’s open to everyone, and taking part is as easy as pulling on a pair of shoes and walking as far and as often as you can.

Walk to work.
Walk to school.
Have a walking meeting.
Stride around the block.
Go for a lunchtime stroll.
Walk to the bus stop.
Walk to the shops.
Walk to appointments.
Walk with a friend.
Walk home!

All you have to do is register to take part here and start logging your miles! There’s a lot more information there about how to build walking into your daily routine. You can also check out CityConnect’s new walking offer/tips, including routes, maps and an interactive journey planner.

The TPN’s active travel project CityConnect has partnered with Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, to support workplaces in the region who want to build and embrace a culture of walking – just contact the CityConnect team to find out more: cityconnect@westyorks-ca.gov.uk.
