Celebrating Bike Week 2021

We’re celebrating Bike Week!

Cycling UK Bike Week is an annual celebration of cycling, highlighting the simple joy of riding a bike and raising awareness of the benefits to us and the planet.

This year, the theme is health and wellbeing. Cycling is a brilliant way to get active and enjoy the outdoors. Not only is it great for your physical health, but cycling can also boost your mental wellbeing.

Bikes are a sustainable mode of transport, and switching some journeys from car to bike will slash your carbon footprint – your journey can become climate-friendly in an instant. Cycling to work or school also reduces road congestion and pollution.

So, as lockdown eases and we head back to the workplace, Bike Week is a great opportunity to shake up your routine and travel by bike.

We’re making it as easy as possible to get into cycling and travel around Leeds by bike. Not sure how to start? We’re offering Bikeability Family Training, to help you feel safe and happy when cycling. The level of the training will be tailored to your needs, whether you need help keeping up with the kids in the park, or want to make sure the whole family is confident cycling on the roads.

To celebrate Bike Week, our Bike Register team will be popping up all over Leeds, including at Leeds Urban Bike Park Middleton, Stanningley Fire Station and Leeds Dock. Bike Register is a national cycle database that helps protect bikes from theft and helps the police to reunite stolen bikes with their owners. Keep an eye on @ConnectingLeeds for more information about where to find us during Bike Week.

Ask your employer if they offer a ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme, which slashes the cost of buying a new bike. And if you ride a bike to work at least three times a week, why not try an electric bike? We’re running a free e-bike trial scheme.

Leeds City Council is working on a range of projects making it easier than ever to cycle in Leeds, whether that’s commuting to work every day or cycling for fun in the park. From new cycle lanes to Bike Register pop-ups, we’re committed to making Leeds a cycle-friendly city.

Let’s move towards greener, healthier travel in Leeds. Are you ready to get involved?
